Rainbow Cake

It was my little girls 3rd birthday yesterday and after being up till 2am
baking up a storm the night before - that 1st slice was totally worth all the effort!
Needless to say, I spent the rest of the day wallowing in my own cake-baking smugness!
Now, anyone got any ideas what to do with 14 egg yolks...
If you fancy wallowing in your own cake-baking smugness, then you can find
all the details for the recipe here, on the fabulous foodie blog Whisk Kid

"The Littlest Bo" at The White House

This year's holidays decorations at the White House will include quite a few renderings
of the first pup, Bo. Take a look at the process of making the "Button Bo",
which happens to be the smallest of the litter.

"If she enjoys it, suits me fine!"

This little video is such a joy!

Buttons, a farthing a pair!

Buttons, a farthing a pair!
Come, who will buy them of me?
They're round and sound and pretty,
And fit for girls of the city.
Come, who will buy them of me?
Buttons, a farthing a pair!

Button Boxes

A few months ago, I overindulged myself on some lovely little wooden button boxes. I offered them for sale on my facebook page and they all flew off the shelves in about half an hour! I'm sure, I've got more but I can't remember where I put them!

Buttons Galore!

Now here's an eBay seller after my own heart! I buy lots of buttons off eBay and generally, the photos of the buttons are either in piles, all lined up or in bags or tins. This seller has gone the extra mile - I love their ingenious way of displaying them to sell! I'm off to put a bid in...

Remembrance Day 2011

On the 11th Hour, on the 11th Day, on the 11th Month,
in the 11th Year, We Will Remember Them.
It's Remembrance (Armistice) Day today; a memorial day observed in
Commonwealth countries to remember the sacrifices of members of the armed forces
and civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War.

People traditionally wear a red poppy which has now become the emblem of
Remembrance Day due to the poem, "In Flanders Fields".
These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I,
their brilliant red colour, an appropriate symbol for the blood spilt in war.

'Buttons in the Ground'

'Buttons in the Ground' is a loss of innocence story about Lucy Calvin, a young girl
with a wild imagination in a very real and depressing world that surrounds her.
When her older sister abandons Lucy and her mother, Lucy sets to work
planting a button excitedly waiting for it to grow while her mother, Abigail,
denies that this can happen. As a sprout eventually appears, Lucy's hopes raise
while Abigail watches distantly.

'Buttons in the Ground' is a film that proves that while you're never too young
to lose your faith, you're never too old to find it.

If you are anywhere near Los Angeles on Monday 7th November 2011,
then join the team behind the new film, 'Buttons in the Ground'
at the Silent Movie Theater at 7:30P for the LA Premiere.

If you do manage to see the film, come back and let me know all about it -
it sounds fabulous and I would love to see it!

Oh Dear, Oh Doctor!

On my Google travels yesterday, I came across this rare pair of 18th century German pictorial surgeon's cloak buttons, which are going under the hammer at Bonhams on 9th Nov 2011. Not only is the estimate value enough to make you raise your eyebrows (£700-£900), but so is the subject matter!
Sale 19035 (Item 101) - Fine Mechanical Music and Scientific Instruments, 9 Nov 2011,
Bonhams, Knightsbridge. (Estimate: £700-900, €810 - 1,000)
The first button shows a scene of a doctor administering an enema to a patient in a bedroom interior, with a sleigh bed & chamber pot in view, the second shows a patient using chamber pot with the doctor standing over him with the enema under the bed drapes! Each of the buttons are hollow nickel metal with rolled stud construction to verso and are 1.1/8in (2.8cm) diameter.
It's such a bizarre image to portray on Buttons, I wonder what the Surgeon, who wore these on his coat, was like? He must have liked to raise an eyebrow or 2!

"Buttons, Buttons, Buttons! A whole festival for them!
Buttonfest is on this Saturday in Melbourne at Burwood Heights Uniting Church -
a nice serene setting for a lovely day of perusal. The Victorian Button Collector's Club
is putting it on, and as they're genuinely old school, they don't have a website...
So you'll just have to rock up at the church between 9 and 3.30pm on Saturday,
like the old days!" Frankie Magazine
Taken right out of the mouth of the wonderful Frankie Magazine here -
because I could not have said it any better myself!

Reversed Carved Lucite Buttons

David Lechleitner, a fan on the Bonkers About Buttons facebook page, recently shared a photo on the wall of one of his reversed-carved Lucite buttons that he makes. It takes David about a month in total to finish a button, which includes the carving and the drying time between paint coats & glue - it's so wonderfully intricate & a real labour of love!

Jumble Sale Booty

Whilst dropping my son off for a Cub's outing, I spotted a village hall jumble sale, in the process of setting up. We packed him off on the bus and had a little wander around the windswept carpark. Most of the items, were jumble and very tired looking but I did spot the sewing box & buttons within 5 seconds of arriving! I grabbed picked them up and paid the princely sum of £3.00 for the lot! The sewing box needs a bit of clean but it barely looks used, and the buttons... well... there are some beauties in there! more photos soon...

I came across this lovely piece of writing by Keith Russell on redbubble and wanted to share it. Have you ever left something for someone else to find?

Button Holed (A Button Box Mystery) by Kylie Logan

I came across this book today on Amazon and thought it looked quite intriguing. There are no reviews about the book and it seem to be the first in a series - have you read it? I'd love to hear about it, if so! Given that it's a mystery series, I wonder if Mrs Button-Hook is the perpetrator, and with which weapon and in what room!

Birthday Buttons

It was my birthday yesterday and I had a great lunch out with some of my oldest friends. I received some fabulous gifts, most of which had a theme... can you spot it?

Clutch o' Buttons

Evelina posted this great photo on Craftster, of a recycled clutch she covered in buttons, as a gift for her sister. It took a full 4 hours to sew all those buttons on, with some very sore fingers afterwards! I think she did a great a job!

Button & Bows

I came across this song today for the first time & given that it was first recorded in 1947 & has been sung by both Bob Hope & Jane Russell - I'm surprised it's passed me by! The lyrics are kinda cute too! If you dying for more info on the song, pop over to Wikipedia here!

East is east and west is west
And the wrong one I have chose
Let's go where I'll keep on wearin'
Those frills and flowers and buttons and bows
Rings and things and buttons and bows
Don't bury me in this prairie
Take me where the cement grows
Let's move down to some big town
Where they love a gal by the cut o' her clothes
And I'll stand out
In buttons and bows
I'll love you in buckskin
Or skirts that I've homespun
But I'll love ya' longer, stronger where
Yer friends don't tote a gun
My bones denounce the buckboard bounce
And the cactus hurts my toes
Let's vamoose where gals keep usin'
Those silks and satins and linen that shows
And I'm all yours in buttons and bows
Gimme eastern trimmin' where women are women
In high silk hose and peek-a-boo clothes
And French perfume that rocks the room
And I'm all yours in buttons and bows

Buttons by Marian Barker

When I was just a little child
Sat at my mother’s knee
She used to tell me stories
We didn’t watch TV

She had a box of buttons
She took down from the shelves
And for hours upon hours
We would entertain ourselves

The buttons held many memories
For mother and for me
They captured special moments
In our family history

A military button from my granddad
For he was very brave
He fought for king and country
It said so on his grave

A tiny pearl from grandma
I really must confess
This was my very favourite
It was from her wedding dress

A shiny silver button
From the blazer dad once wore
When he went to watch the cricket
Hoping that his team would score

A little yellow button
With a flower on from me
From my tiny little jacket
That mum called a matinee

A woggle from the cub scouts
Was amongst the fine array
My brothers went there once or twice
But didn’t want to stay

Those buttons taught me colours
And taught me how to count
They taught me shapes and sizes
Of that there is no doubt

Now I’ve got a box of buttons
I take down from my shelves
And tell stories to my grandchildren
We do enjoy ourselves

Christmas Tree Buttons

Another little find on eBay - 90 antique glass buttons sewn on card, in the shape of a christmas tree - I love the aging of the card as much as the buttons!

Bakelite Buttons

I found these wonderful Bakelite buttons from the 1930s while trawling eBay recently - I have never seen any quite like them before with the tassles and bakelite tips. I uhmmed & aahhed about bidding on them and decided against it as they were quite expensive, and then regretted it... it's always the way! I wonder what they would of been used for... a coat maybe?
